FORESTRY
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
For successful completion of the forestry section, contestants should be able to:
1. Determine where assistance may be obtained for forest management and harvesting
activities.
2. Define the measurement of board feet, linear feet, chain, cord, and rick.
3. Identify tree species listed in 4-H 642 when given one of the following: leaves on twig, bark, or fruit.
4. Prescribe forest management practices when given a specific production goal.
5. Prepare a tree planting plan for timber production, wind breaks, erosion control, wildlife habitat,
watershed protection, or post and pulp wood production.
6. Determine the number of board feet in a tree using a Biltmore stick.
7. List the purposes of timber production, and select species suitable for specific production goals.
8. Describe the purpose of an increment borer in a forest.
9. Demonstrate how to properly plant a tree.
10. Differentiate between deciduous, evergreen, and hardwood tree species.
11. Explain and diagram succession for any area of New York.
12. Recognize tree diseases and the susceptible species that they attack.
13. Diagram and define the characteristics of a typical tree.
14. Identify leaf arrangement and placement patterns.
