ADVISOR ACTIVITY DESCRIPTIONS
The New York State Envirothon Committee has decided to follow the Canon Envirothon and not allow the advisors to
accompany their team during the competition. We are offering a variety of advisors activities, participation is
encouraged. As in years past the advisors will have an opportunity to review the exams after all the scheduled
activites.
We ask that the advisors register in advance for the activity they would like to attend.
Hike Vroman's Nose
A big payoff in view for little investment in walking! Vroman's Nose is
a short, fairly easy climb but offers a nice view of the Schoharie Creek valley.
Below Zero: Activities to Teach Winter Ecology
A fun and active way to learn about the biology and conservation of wildlife
in winter and frozen environments. The guide contains 46 interdisciplinary activities for grades K- 12 in lesson
plan format. Appendices include lots of winter info. Participants will experience a variety of fun activities both
indoors and out.
New York Power Authority Visitor Center and Gilboa Fossil Trees
NYPA has a power generating plant in Blenheim on Schoharie Creek. Part of
the land has been devoted to a visitor center with interesting exhibits on energy generation, conservation, and
wildlife of the area. Also, a quick visit to the oldest fossil tree stumps in the world at nearby Gilboa.
Paddle Franklinton Vlaie
A New York State Wildlife Management Area, Franklinton Vlaie is an easy,
flat paddle for all levels. The marsh is home to many wildlife species, including bald eagles.
Paddle Schoharie Creek
A five mile stretch of the Schoharie from NYS Rte 7 to US Rte 20. There
is some current and so this paddle is appropriate for intermediate skilled paddlers.
Visit Howe Caverns (on your own)
Check out one of the world's premier dissolved limestone cave systems. Make
arrangements on your own. There is a fee for this visit.
